THE TSENGLAP TRIBE OF JIWAKA

A Tribal Myth

Tsenglap-Two Tribe

Tsenglap No.2 Tribe refers to people who have migrated into Tsenglap from other places. These immigrants make up another small tribe inside Tsenglap and we refer to these people as Tsenglap Number Two. Most of these immigrants are from neighbouring Chimbu Province.

There are also a minor group of people from Southren Highlands and Enga living inside Tsenglap. These people migrated into Tsenglap in early 1970s and 1980s when Wahgi Mek plantation was in operation. They came here as plantation labourers and eventually settled here permanently. There is also a small number of people who have migrated from other areas around Jiwaka Province who live within Tsenglap area. They have now become part of Tsenglap Tribe and are scattered among each Tsenglap clans. Most of these immigrants live along the Wahgi River.

The Immigrants

Tsenglap No.2 immigrants have been living in Tsenglap for over 30 years and todays young children are probably second and third generation Tsenglaps. These immigrants do support Tsenglap Tribe in so many ways such as bride price, compensation and tribal warfare. There were a group of Konmuke people living at Nangamb and Taikan, but now they have all migrated. Today, there are no longer any Konmuke people living there. Tsenglap population has grown rapidly and now Tsenglap Tribe has over 10,000 people.
