Places Inside Tsenglap

Popular Places inside Tsenglap Territory

The different Clans and sub-clans inside the Tsenglap have their own singsing grounds and sacred places. Each clan has its own story to tell about their sacred places. Here below are some significant places of note inside the Tsenglap.

Ambang
Ambang is the traditional headquarters of the Dangekanem Clan. The Dangekanem have their Singsing grounds at Ambang. Ambang is also home to Baimankanem Kuwulngalim.

Indu One
Indu One is the traditional singsing ground of Baimankanem Clan. Indu is the home of Baimankanem Indu Daam.

Tupa
The Aikup Clan have their traditional gathering place at Tupa Village. The Aikups have their singsing ground at Tupa and they live around the Tupa area.

Kendu Jimbina
Kendu Jimbina is the traditional headquarters of Baiman Clan. The Baiman have their singsing grounds at Kendu Jimbina

Tolu Point
Tolu Point is the present meeting place of Ghilghalkup, Kombultal and Baimankanem Oldkanem clans. However, this is not a traditional gathering place, Tolu does not have any tribal significance.

Kip Village
Kip Village - the traditional headquarters of the Ghilghalkup Clan. Kip Kundula is where Ghilgalkup clan have their singsing grounds and pig killing rituals. The last big singsing and pig killing ceremony by the Tsenglap Tribe was held in 1977. Sir Kaiabelt Diria officiated the Ghilgalkup ceremony at Kip Village in 1977.

Koimba
Koimba is the traditional headquarters of the Baimankanem Oldkanem (the Koiwai). Their singsing ground is at Koimba.

Kurumul
Kurumul is the traditional headquarters of the Kombilikanem Clan. The Kombilikanem have their singsing grounds at Kurumul, they have lived there since time immemorial.

Guralpe
Guralpe village is the traditional headquarters of Baiman Karmanka (Kombultal). Karmanka people live at Guralpe, and they are natives of this place.

Yappa
Yappa or Ambang-Yappa is the traditional headquarters of Kumukanem Clan. Kumukanem clan have their singsing grounds at Yappa.

Kumngana
Sekaingkanem sub-clan of Kumukanem live at Kumngana Village.

Koswah
Wasekanem sub-clan of the Kumukanem clan live at Koswah Village.

Kum
The Kombultal Baiman and Ghilghalkup live at Kum Village.

Binzkhu
Baimankanem Tambemkanem live at Binzkhu. Binzkhu is further up from Ambang Village.

Kinzip Sawmill
Kinzip is further up from Binzkhu going towards the headwaters of the Binz River. In early 1960s a Sawmill was established at Kinzip and a lot of native trees were cut down by some foreigners. Timber sawn by Kinzip Sawmill was used to build the Ambang Catholic Church and many other buildings around Wahgi Area between 1960 and 1970.

Baria
Baria is a place next to Kerowil, west of Nangamp. Dangekanem Nolminzkanem sub-clan live at Baria Village.

Ngangamb
Nangamp is where the first airstrip in the Wahgi Valley was built in the 1930s. New Guinea Highlands Explorer Jim Taylor set up camp at Nangamb inside Baiman territory. Baiman clan live at Nangamp.

Binz
Binz is next to the Kamarl Plantation and people from various clans inside the Tsenglap all live there. The Kumukanem, Kulpal, Kombilikanem, Ghilghalkup and Baimankanem all live there.

Kulamp
Kulamb is where the Kulpal Wahgi-Daam live. The Wahgi Daam have lived there since time immemorial.
