East Kambia is part of New Jiwaka Province. West Kambia is still part of Western Highlands Province. East Kambia comes under South Wahgi Electorate of the new Jiwaka Province. Kambia District Office is at Mountain Station. East Kambia shares their eastern border with Gumine District of neighbouring Chimbu Province.

Kambia is remote and least developed, however it has potential for tourism. There is also prospects of mineral deposits in Kambia.

When Jiwaka became a province in 2009, East Kambia remained a district of Jiwaka, and West Kambia remained part of Western Highlands Province.
