THE TSENGLAP TRIBE OF JIWAKA

A Tribal Myth

Brief History of Tsenglap

The Tsenglaps do not have a written history. All we do know about the origin of the Tsenglap Tribe is traditional folklore and myths handed down by word of mouth from generation to generation.

According to traditional history, the Tsenglaps are descended from their great ancestor Karap. Tsenglap's great ancestor Karap had the following sons: Ngants, Kapang, Ai, Berep and Kupus. Ai was the first born son of Karap and Kupus, the last born. The present Aikup Clan is descended from their father Ai. Karap's other sons are: Ngants, Kapang and Berep. Descendants of Ngants and Kapang now make up Kumuka Ngants Kapangkup (KNK) tribe of North Wahgi. Descendants of Berep now form the Berepka tribe of South Wahgi.

The Karapka Legend

Clans of Kumukanem, Dangekanem, Kombilikanem, Baimankanem and Kulpal are descended from Karap's last born son Kupus. These five clans are known as Tsenglap Kupuskup. The descendants of Karap's other son; Berep are no longer part of the Tsenglap any more. As time passed by and as the population increased there were internal conflicts and the sons of Ngants, Kapang and Berep were chased out of the Tsenglap Territory. The descendants of Karap's son Berep are called the Berepka. The Berepka have migrated to the south side of the Wahgi River and now form the Berepka Tribe of South Wahgi.

To this day, Berepka people of South Wahgi and Ngants Kapangkup people of North Wahgi know very well that they were once part of Tsenglap Tribe. Other Tsenglap clans are Baiman, Gilgalkup and Tsenglap Number Two. These clans have their own little history of how they handed up in the Tsenglap.
