A Tribal Myth

Tsenglap Tribe in Politics

Tsenglap Tribe has made its presence known in the Political arena both at National and Provincial level. At Local level, the Wahgi Local Government Council Chambers was at Kerowil inside Tsenglap Territory. In post colonial days prior to independance in 1975, there was only one Local Government Council for the Wahgi Area, known as Wahgi Local Government Council. After independance in 1977, they separated the Wahgi Council into two local government councils now known as North Wahgi and South Wahgi Local Government Councils respectively. The Wahgi Council (North and South) set up the once renown coffee exporting company - the Wahgi Mek Plantations. Wahgi Mek Plantations at one time was one of the major coffee exporters. Wahgi Mek coffee factory was at Tolu near Binz River inside Tsenglap Territory. After they separated the Wahgi Councils, North Waghi Local Government Council chamber was moved from Kerowil to Banz in 1985.

At the Provincial level, during the 1982 Western Highlands Provincial Government Elections, Steven Kambiye of Baimankanem Clan of the Tsenglap Tribe won the election for Banz Constituency. After his declaration, Steven Kambiye entered Western Highlands Provincial Government and he was given portfolio as Provincial Finance Minister under the premiership of Nabuga Mara. Steven Kambiye was provincial Finance minister from 1982 to 1987. After 1987 provincial elections Banz Constituency was won by Philip Kapal of the Tsegaga Tribe, and eventually became premier of Western Highlands Province. During Steven Kambiye's term in the provincial office, he gave assistance to the construction of Kimil Health Centre. This Kimil Health Centre still stands to this day and continues to serve the people of North wahgi.

In 1994, during the Provincial Government Elections, Paul Kerenga Ansphill of the Baimankanem Clan of the Tsenglap won the elections for the Banz Constituency. After winning the elections he entered the Western Highlands Provincial Assembly and was the Provincial Opposition Leader. During his stint as the Provincial Opposition Leader he was vocal about issues affecting the Jiwaka people. Paul Ansphill was opposition leader until 1995, when the PNG National Government abolished the provincial government system.

Wahgi Politics

At National level, late Sir Kaibelt Diria was elected as Member for Wahgi into the Papua New Guinea House Of Assembly in 1964. Prior to 1977, there was only one open electorate for the Wahgi Area. After 1977, they separated Wahgi into two electorates now known as North Wahgi and Anglimb South Wahgi. Sir Kaibelt Diria, a son of Tsenglap Tribe and hails from the Gilgalkup clan was member of the former House of Assembly during Self Government and Independance days. Sir Kaibelt Diria was Minister for Post and Telegraphs, and he ensured that areas around Minz and Banz were linked up with landline telephone, a landmark which is in place to this day.

During his term in Parliment he teamed up with Sir Michael Somare and made Sir Michael to become Chief Minister during the Self Goverment days. Sir Kaibelt Diria was a Member of the House of Assembly for 13 years from 1964 to 1977. After 1977 National Elections, North Wahgi seat was won by Talu Bolt of Waka Tribe of Nondugl. North Wahgi Open Seat was occupied by the late Talu Bolt from 1977 to 1982. After the 1982 National Elections, the North Wahgi Seat was won by William Wii of the Kumuka Tribe (KNK). Honourable William Wii was North Wahgi member for ten (10) years from 1982 to 1992. After 1992 elections, North Wahgi seat was won by Iambal Aipe from the Juruka clan of Kombulo Tribe of Warakar. Hon. Iambal Aipe was Member for North Wahgi from 1992 to 1997.

Then in the 1997 National Elections, North Wahgi Open Seat was won by Dr. Fabian Pok of Tsenglap Tribe. Dr. Fabian Pok is from Kumukanem clan of Tsenglap Tribe and he Comes from Ambang Village. During Dr. Pok's term as member for North Wahgi, he was a power broker in both the Bill Skate and Sir Mekere Morauta Governments. Straight after the 1997 elections, Dr. Pok was a caretaker minister for several ministries and later he held many ministrial portfolios under the Skate and Morauta governments. During his term as MP, Dr. Pok was minister for Forests, Lands and Physical Planning, Public Enterprises & Communications, Petroleum & Energy and Labour & Employment. He held ministerial portfolios in his full five year term. During Dr. Pok's term in Parliament, the North Wahgi Electorate has seen a lot of changes in terms of physical development.

The major development was the construction of the Banz District office, the Dumbola Health Centre which was burnt down after the 2007 Elections, and the extension of power pylons from Tolu to Dona and beyond. Dr. Pok also used his Electoral Development funds to buy vehicles for essential services such Ambulance, Police and Education. He also donated a grader to the North Wahgi Electorate and over 500 coffee pupling machines to the people of North Wahgi. During the Bill Skate Administration, approval was given for the establishment of the PNG Defence Force Highlands Regional Engineering Base at Kerowil. The Singiroks Barracks is inside the Tsenglap Territory at Kerowil.

Dr. Fabian Pok lost his re-election in the 2002 National Elections, and the North Wahgi Open seat was won by Michael Mas Kal of the Kulaka Tribe. Fabian Pok contested again in the 2007 National Elections but was unsuccessful, and the North Wahgi seat was won by Benjamin Ngents Mul. During the 2012 National Elections, Dr Fabian Pok contest again and won for the North Wahgi Seat. Dr Fabian Pok was endoresd by United Resources Party, one of major coalition parties in the PNC led-government. Fabian Pok was given the Defence Ministerial Portfolio, and served as Papua New Guinea's Minister for Defence from 2012 to 2017.

During the 2017 National General Elections, North Wahgi Open seat was again retained by Hon. Fabian Pok of the Tsenglap Tribe. Fabian Pok contested under United Resources Party, a major coalition party in the current PNG-led government. Fabian Pok was appointed as Minister For Petroleum by the Prime Minister.
