The new Jiwaka Province was created by the National Government through an act of parliament in 2009. Jiwaka Province was created by separating three electorates of Western Highlands Province. Jimi, North Wahgi and South Wahgi electorates now form the new Jiwaka Province. Hagen Central, Dei, Mul-Baiyer and Tambul-Nebiliya electorates, remain with Western Highlands Province. Jiwaka province covers areas of middle Wahgi, Jimi and East Kambia. There are three Electorates in the new Province: Jimi, North Wahgi and South Wahgi.
From 2010 to June 2012, an interim Administration known as Jiwaka Transitional Authority (JTA) was established by the Government to administer affairs of the New Province during the transition period. During 2012 National General Elections, the people of Jiwaka were proud to elect their own governor. Dr William Tongamp PhD was elected as pioneer Governor of Jiwaka. Dr. Tongamp is an academic and has been living and teaching at Akita University in Japan for eleven years.
The three open electorates also elected their own Open Members of Parliament for the first time under the new Province. For the three open seats, Jimi Open seat was won by Hon. Mai Dop, who contested under United Resources Party. North Wahgi seat was won by Hon. Fabian Pok, a former MP. Anglimp South Wahgi seat was won by Komun Joe Koim. Anglimp South Wahgi by comparision, is the biggest Electorate in PNG. The Electoral Boundaries Commission might separate this electorate, and Anglimb District may most likely become part of Western Highlands Province.
Recently the National Executive Council has appointed Mr. Michael Wandil as Administrator for Jiwaka Province. Mr. Wandil, from Tsegaga Tribe of Warakar (North Wahgi), is a career public servant and a former Provincial Administrator for Western Highlands Province.
After 2017 National General Elections; Jiwaka members of Parliament were: Dr William Tongamp - Governor of Jiwaka; Romun Joe Kuli - Member for Anglimb South Wahgi; Waka Goi - Member for Jimi; and Dr Fabian Pok - Member for North Wahgi and Minister For Petroleum.
