THE TSENGLAP TRIBE OF JIWAKA

A Tribal Myth

Tolu To Kurumul Road

In early 2016, the people of Kurumul and Koimba villages inside Tsenglap took the initiative to construct their own feeder road from Tolu to Kurumul villages. This road was built entirely by hand, using local manpower. Instead of waiting for assistance from government, young men and boys decided to embark on constructing this road link. People of Kurumul village can now be able to transport coffee bags or garden produce to roadside market at Tolu or Banz Township. Tolu-Kurumul road is a two phase project. Phase 1 has been completed, vehicles can now drive from Tolu to Kurumul village and turn around near Kasbalnol creek. Phase 2 of this project will see construction of a bridge across Kasbalnol creek, which will open up road link to Koimba Village.

Coordinator of Tolu-Kurumul road project, Mr. Joseph Kupie said, "if we wait for the government to come and build this road, we might wait forever, so we decided on the best alternate option, I mobilised the already surplus village labour force and we started the project." Mr. Kupie said, we have done our part, so far interest among local youths is encouraging. Phase 1 has been complete, Phase 2 will start soon, however we need assistance from the government to construction a permanent bride across Kasbalnol creek." The local boys are really optimistic, once Kasbalnol bridge is complete, Phase 2 of this project will link Kurumul and Koimba.

Tolu Kurumul Koimba

This initiative taken by Tsenglap youths from Kurumul and Koimba did not go unnoticed, news of this project was brought to the Jiwaka Provincial Government. In early 2017, Governor William Tongamp visited Kurumul village. Governor Tongamp drove from Tolu all the way to Kasbalnol dead-end. The governor was pleased with Koiwai villages and promised to assist with bridge construction and phase 2 of this project. Any assistance from the Provincial Government or the District Development Authority will see completion of Koiwai Road Project.
