A Tribal Myth

Dr Fabian Pok

Fabian Pok hails from the Sekaingkanem sub-Clan under Kumukanem Clan of The Tsenglap Tribe. He comes from Ambang Village near Ambang Catholic Mission Station. Fabian Pok was born in 1963 and did his primary schooling at Ambang St. Edward Community School. After Ambang community school, he went on to Fatima High School near Banz, now known as Fr. Peter Secondary School. From Fatima High School, he attended Keravat National High School in East New Britain Province. After two years of matriculation at Keravat, he entered the University Of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) to study Commerce and Accounting. He graduated with a Bachelors of Arts (Hons) in Commerce at UPNG. After UPNG, he secured an AusAid Scholarship to do further studies in Australia.

Fabian Pok entered the University of New England (UNE), in Armidale NSW, Australia to do further studies. On the 03rd of March 1990, Fabian Pok graduated with a Masters in Economics. After graduating with a Masters he continued on to do a PhD Program at the same University. On the 24th of March 1994, Fabian Pok graduated with a Doctorate degree in Accounting and Financial Management and Econometrics, making him the first and youngest person in the Pacific Island to get a PhD in this field.

Dokta Pok

Upon his return from studying in Australia, he was a senior lecturer at the University of PNG's Commerce Department. He was also a private consultant to various government departments and private business houses. In 1997, Dr. Fabian Pok resigned from teaching at UPNG and entered National Politics. He contested the North Wahgi Open Seat in the 1997 National Elections and won. Straight after the declaration he was appointed a caretaker minister for several ministries and later held various ministerial portfoios under both the Bill Skate and Mekere Morauta Governments.

When Dr. Fabian Pok was a member of Parliament, he held various ministrial portfolios during his full five year term. He was minister for Forests, Lands and Physical Planning, Public Enterprises and Communications, Petroleum and Energy; and Labour and Employment. Dr. Pok lost the elections in the 2002 National Elections and the North Wahgi Seat was won by Michael Mas Kal of the Kulaka Tribe. During Dr. Pok's term as Member for North Wahgi, the Electorate has seen a lot of changes in terms of physical development. Some of the major projects that were initiated by Dr. Pok are, the construction of the new Banz District Office, the establishment of the PNG Defence Force Engineering Base at Kerowil and the construction of the Dumbola Health Centre, which was burnt down after the 2007 National Elections.

After almost ten years absence from National Politics, Dr. Fabian Pok contested for the North Wahgi Open seat in the 2012 National General Elections. Fabian Pok contested as a United Resources Party candidate, and was declared winner for North Wahgi Open, unseating Hon. Benjamin Ngents Mul. After formation of Government, Fabian Pok was appointed as: Papua New Guinea's Minister For Defence, a portfolio he held from 2012 to 2017. In the 2017 National General Elections, Fabian Pok was again re-elected as member for North Wahgi Open. After formation of Government Fabian Pok was allocated the Petroleum Ministry Portfolio, and currently serves as Minister For Petroleum.

Dr. Fabian Pok is the Author of three books and has presented many papers at conferences within Papua New Guinea and aboard relating to Accounting issues in developing countries.
